Training

The selected applicants will take part in an 11-week intense paid training program, consisting of 7 weeks of classroom instruction at the CN Campus in Winnipeg, MB, and 4 weeks of field training. The corporation will pay for travel, lodging, and food expenses incurred while in Winnipeg.

To further develop their knowledge and abilities, candidates will finish a minimum of 45 journeys as an additional member of a crew after these first 11 weeks. To be employed as a conductor, candidates must complete the full training program, which consists of written tests and field training (including any necessary physical training).

Responsibilities

To fulfill the requirements of the Conductor position, an employee needs to be able to accomplish the essential job responsibilities listed in this section, whether or not accommodations are provided.

  • Adhering to all railroad safety and operational laws, rules, and signals about trains.
  • Giving and receiving written and verbal directions in different formats about the positioning and transportation of rail cars.
  • Putting together and taking apart trains in the rail yard and transporting and unloading rail cars.
  • Monitoring the condition of a train and its equipment.
  • Interpreting and relaying signals to ensure safe train and locomotive movement.
  • Utilizing track switches to alter the routes taken by locomotives and rail cars
  • Examining the equipment and train’s state
  • Making wise choices in emergencies or in unknown places
  • Using portable radios to efficiently communicate frequently with the Rail Traffic Control Center, other train crews, and other departments

Physical requirements and working conditions

  • Conforming to the 24/7 railroading environment by maintaining a flexible schedule that includes regular and predictable attendance (this may involve working overtime and long weekends or nights).
  • Lifting and pulling objects up to 90 pounds; pushing and tugging
  • Operating outside in a range of climates and environmental circumstances
  • Using handbrakes and levers to disconnect rail cars and locomotives, among other equipment
  • Scaling and descending rail car ladders
  • Holding and grabbing items while traveling beside a train
  • Frequent, prolonged walking
  • Constantly bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling
  • Fulfilling the position’s medical fitness standards, including those set forth by the Railway Association of Canada, such as having the capacity to identify and distinguish between the colors of signals

Qualification

  • Completing and passing tests on regulations and safety. (Note: By the collective bargaining agreement, continued employment and seniority require qualification as a locomotive engineer.)
  • A GED or high school diploma
  • Acquiring and preserving a Conductors Rule Card
  • Owning and maintaining a passport that permits travel to and from both Canada and the US (in some restricted areas)
  • Effectiveness in written and spoken communication
