Alexander Rutherford Scholarship 2024 Deadline

In honor of the first premier of Alberta, Canada, there is a distinguished scholarship called the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. This merit-based award offers financial assistance to post-secondary students pursuing higher education while also recognizing exceptional academic achievement.

Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship

Alexander Rutherford, who held the distinction of being Alberta’s first Premier and Minister of Education, is honored by the name of this scholarship. He was well-known for his vigorous involvement in community affairs and his ardent support of public education, especially at the University of Alberta.

Objective

Senior high school student’s academic achievements should be honored, and this should motivate them to continue post-secondary education.

As much as $2,500

Qualifications

• Once your official high school transcript is available and you are enrolled full-time in your current post-secondary education program, apply. Transcripts from high school will have different requirements.
• You must also fulfill each of the following requirements to be eligible for this scholarship:
• be a protected person under Canadian immigration laws, a permanent resident of Canada, or a citizen of Canada

Requirements

• be a protected person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act of Canada, a permanent resident of Canada, or a citizen of Canada (students on visas are not eligible).
• be a resident of Alberta, and to qualify as such, one of the following requirements must be met:
• Before the candidate started a study program, at least one parent or legal guardian had to have maintained permanent residence in Canada for a minimum of 12 months;
• the candidate has lived permanently in Alberta for at least a year before starting a course of study.
• The applicant or their parent(s) or legal guardian must have been a resident of Alberta the entire time for the applicant to be eligible for a scholarship in any grade having graduated from high school on September 30, 1980, or after.
• be enrolled full-time in an apprenticeship program lasting at least one semester or in a recognized undergraduate post-secondary institution.

Note: This grant is not available for graduate-level coursework or professional degrees (such as optometry, veterinary medicine, medicine, etc.).

The Alexander Rutherford scholarship can only be given to you once.

Selection

For at least one grade, a student needs to obtain a minimum cumulative average based on five approved courses. Grades ten, eleven, or twelve as determined by:

• Courses and grades on an official Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement for residents of Alberta
• Courses and grades that show up on an official high school transcript obtained in a different province for students who completed their high school education outside of Alberta When students apply for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship, they will automatically be considered for the following prizes.

How to Apply (for the 2025 Scholarship)

The application window typically opens in early August. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

1. Check the Alberta Student Aid Website: Keep an eye on their website in early August for the application to become available.
2. Gather Your Documents: You’ll need your official high school transcripts and proof of enrollment in a full-time post-secondary program.
3. Apply Online: The application process is done electronically through the Alberta Student Aid website.
