Qualifications
- Once your official high school transcript is available and you are enrolled full-time in your current post-secondary education program, apply. Transcripts from high school will have different requirements.
- You must also fulfill each of the following requirements to be eligible for this scholarship:
- be a protected person under Canadian immigration laws, a permanent resident of Canada, or a citizen of Canada

- be a protected person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act of Canada, a permanent resident of Canada, or a citizen of Canada (students on visas are not eligible).
- be a resident of Alberta, and to qualify as such, one of the following requirements must be met:
- Before the candidate started a study program, at least one parent or legal guardian had to have maintained permanent residence in Canada for a minimum of 12 months;
- the candidate has lived permanently in Alberta for at least a year before starting a course of study.
- The applicant or their parent(s) or legal guardian must have been a resident of Alberta the entire time for the applicant to be eligible for a scholarship in any grade having graduated from high school on September 30, 1980, or after.
- be enrolled full-time in an apprenticeship program lasting at least one semester or in a recognized undergraduate post-secondary institution.
Note: This grant is not available for graduate-level coursework or professional degrees (such as optometry, veterinary medicine, medicine, etc.).
The Alexander Rutherford scholarship can only be given to you once.
Selection
For at least one grade, a student needs to obtain a minimum cumulative average based on five approved courses. Grades ten, eleven, or twelve as determined by:
- Courses and grades on an official Alberta Transcript of High School Achievement for residents of Alberta
- Courses and grades that show up on an official high school transcript obtained in a different province for students who completed their high school education outside of Alberta When students apply for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship, they will automatically be considered for the following prizes.
